Box style gutter or built-in box gutter?

They share a name but not a design. A box style gutter is a squared trough fastened along the roof edge. A built-in gutter, as the HDLC describes it, is hidden within or behind a cornice or parapet and formed of flashing material around a wood form. This page is about the first kind.

    Historic buildings

In a local historic district, gutter work needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, so check with the HDLC before changing a built-in system.

Where it fits

Where do box style gutters make sense?

Anywhere a lot of roof drains to one edge. This Old House describes box gutters as designed for large volumes of water and more common on commercial buildings, though they also work on homes with complex rooflines. In a city that averages about 63 inches of rain a year, that capacity earns its keep.

Every inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof is roughly 620 gallons of water. On a wide commercial roof that adds up quickly, which is why we size the gutter and place each downspout for the area it drains.

Use and capacity: This Old House, types of gutters. Rainfall: NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals for New Orleans (63.4 in.), via Current Results. Runoff: about 27,154 gallons per inch of rain on an acre, from the USGS Water Science School.

How do box style gutters compare with K-style?

Box style gives you more room in the trough and a plainer, squared face. K-style looks lighter and fits most homes with a standard fascia. For a big commercial roof, or a long run that collects a lot of water, box style is worth a close look.

Materials

Which materials do our box style gutters come in?

We install box style gutters in aluminum, copper, steel and vinyl. Aluminum keeps the system light and rust resistant, copper gives a finished metal look that changes as it weathers, and steel and vinyl round out the options for roofs with particular needs.

Myth or fact

Are box style gutters only for commercial buildings?

No. They're used more on commercial buildings, but box style also suits homes with big roofs, complex rooflines or a squared, modern look. Below, that belief sits next to two more that can point a homeowner toward the wrong system for the roof.

Myth

Box gutters are only for commercial buildings.

Fact

They also work on homes with complex rooflines or high drainage needs.

Myth

A box style gutter and a built-in box gutter are the same thing.

Fact

A box style gutter mounts at the roof edge. A built-in gutter is hidden in a cornice or parapet.

Myth

A bigger gutter means you can skip downspout extensions.

Fact

Capacity doesn't move water away from the house. Extensions still need to carry it at least 4 feet from the foundation.

What is a box style gutter?

A box style gutter is a rectangular gutter with a squared profile, mounted along the roof edge to collect and carry rainwater. It holds a large volume and gives the roofline straight, clean lines. We install box style gutters on homes and commercial buildings in aluminum, copper, steel and vinyl.

What is the difference between box gutters and K-style gutters?

The shape. Box gutters are squared and built for large volumes of water, while K-style gutters have a flat back and a front shaped like crown molding. K-style fits most homes with a standard fascia. Box style suits large roofs, commercial buildings and homes that want a squared look.

Are box gutters good for commercial buildings?

Yes. This Old House notes that box gutters are more common on commercial buildings because they're designed to handle large volumes of water. A wide, flat or low-slope commercial roof can send a lot of water to one edge, so we size the gutter and downspouts for the area it drains.

What is a built-in box gutter?

A built-in box gutter sits within or behind a cornice or parapet, so you can't see it from the ground. The HDLC describes built-in gutters as formed of flashing material wrapped around or within wood forms. They're found on older buildings, and in a historic district any work needs a Certificate of Appropriateness first.

Do box style gutters need gutter guards?

If trees hang over the roof, a leaf guard system is worth considering. A wide trough collects more leaves as well as more water, and a clog in a high-capacity gutter backs up a lot of flow at once. Guards cut down on clogs, though the system still needs an occasional cleaning.

Can box style gutters be matched to my home's trim?

Yes. We match box style gutters to your trim and architectural style, and aluminum comes in a range of colors. Copper gives a natural metal finish instead. We'll go over the options with you and give you a free estimate after we assess your roof.
