Custom gutters in New Orleans

Custom gutters shaped by your roof and your architecture

Custom gutters are gutters designed for one specific house. We look at your roof size, the rain it has to handle and the architectural style of the home, then choose the profile, material and finish that fit. The result works hard in a downpour and looks like it belongs on the building.

If your home has a roofline or a style that standard gutters don't suit, contact us and we'll talk through a design with your free estimate.

What custom means

What makes a gutter system custom?

Four choices, made for your house instead of a catalog: the profile, the size, the material and the color. We base each one on your roof size, the rainfall the system has to carry and the architectural design of the home, then form seamless runs to fit your rooflines.

  1. 1

    Profile

K-style, half-round, box or fascia, chosen to suit the lines of the house.

  2. 2

    Size

Matched to how much roof drains into each run and how fast it sheds water.

  3. 3

    Material

Aluminum, copper, steel, vinyl or zinc, depending on the look and the budget.

  4. 4

    Color and finish

Picked to blend with your trim, or to stand out as a feature, like aged copper.

Which gutter profile suits your home's style?

It depends on the era and the lines of the house. K-style has a crown molding look and carries more water than half-round. Half-round is the rounded, traditional shape seen on many older buildings. Box style gives a squared, clean edge on larger roofs.

K-Style

A flat back and decorative front that reads like trim. It has a higher capacity than half-round, so it suits big roofs and hard rain. See our K-style gutters.

Half-Round

A simple rounded trough with a smooth interior that helps water flow. It fits traditional and historic homes, often in copper or zinc. See our half-round gutters.

Box Style

A squared profile with a clean, architectural edge. It works well on larger roofs and on homes with crisp, straight trim lines. See our box style gutters.

How do custom gutters work on historic New Orleans homes?

Carefully, and often with city review. Inside a local historic district or at a landmark, the HDLC requires a Certificate of Appropriateness before work starts. Its roofing guidelines favor replacing gutters in kind, and allow K-style or half-round gutters where none existed before, after staff review.

The HDLC also notes that many New Orleans buildings were never designed with gutters, yet adding them can greatly reduce water damage to walls, foundations and piers. When gutters go back up, it asks owners to reproduce any special molding, strap or bracket that held the old ones.

Historic district rules: City of New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission (HDLC), Design Guidelines, Section 5: Guidelines for Roofing, pages 05-1 and 05-12.

  • Certificate of Appropriateness first
  • Replace in kind where gutters exist
  • K-style or half-round where none existed
  • HDLC asks owners to reproduce original brackets
Picking a material

How do custom gutter materials compare?

Each metal trades looks, strength, weight and price differently. Aluminum is light, rust resistant and affordable but dents more easily. Copper develops a patina and resists corrosion but costs more. Steel is strong and heavy. Vinyl is the lightest option but less durable than metal.

MaterialWhere it shinesWhat to weigh
AluminumLightweight, rust resistant, relatively inexpensiveDents and bends more easily than other metals
CopperDevelops a patina, resists rust and corrosionCosts more than other materials
SteelStrong and durableMuch heavier than aluminum, harder to install
VinylLight and simple to handleCan turn brittle in extreme heat or cold, and sag if poorly supported

From idea to roofline

How do we design and build your custom gutters?

We start with a consultation at your property, design a system around its layout and look, and only install once you approve the design. Along the way we plan the downspouts and any accessories, so the finished system works as one piece instead of a set of parts.

  1. 1

    Consultation

We assess your property, talk through what you want the gutters to do and how you want them to look.

  2. 2

    Design

We design a solution for your home's layout and style, from our range of gutter materials and profiles.

  3. 3

    Downspouts and accessories

We plan downspout extensions, a leaf guard system if trees overhang the roof, or rain chains as a decorative outlet.

  4. 4

    Your approval

Nothing goes up until you approve the design and your free estimate.

  5. 5

    Installation

Our skilled technicians install each run with precision and care, with the correct slope and positioning.

Can custom gutters be painted to match my house?

Yes, certain gutters, such as aluminum, can be painted to match your color scheme. The right paint and proper application matter for a finish that lasts, so talk to us before you paint. We can also help you choose a gutter color that blends with your trim from the start.

Do I need HDLC approval to add gutters in New Orleans?

If your home is in a local historic district or is a landmark, yes. The HDLC requires a Certificate of Appropriateness and all permits before work begins. Replacing gutters in kind, or adding K-style or half-round gutters where none existed, goes through HDLC staff review.

What is the difference between K-style and half-round gutters?

K-style gutters have a flat back and a decorative front, and they carry more water than half-round gutters. Half-round gutters are a simple rounded trough with a smoother interior for water flow. K-style is a common choice on many homes, while half-round often suits traditional and historic architecture.

Are copper gutters worth it on an older home?

For many older homes, copper is worth considering. It resists rust and corrosion, develops a patina over time, and the HDLC notes copper has the longest potential life span of common gutter materials. It costs more than other options, so we'll help you weigh the look against the budget.

What are built-in gutters?

Built-in gutters are hidden from view, set within or behind features like cornices or parapets. They are formed from flashing materials wrapped around or within wood forms. You see them on some older New Orleans buildings, and they work differently from the hanging gutters most homes have.

Can new gutters match my home's original brackets or trim?

We design every custom system around your home's trim and architectural style, so the new gutters suit the house. On historic homes, HDLC guidelines ask owners to keep original details and reproduce any special molding, strap or bracket that held the old gutters, so check those guidelines before work begins.

Do custom gutters cost more than standard gutters?

It depends on what you choose. Price is driven by the material, the profile, the length of the runs, the number of downspouts and any accessories. Copper and zinc cost more than aluminum. After we see your home, we'll price your options in a free estimate.
